Pixie Cut in Tokyo: Chic, Low-Maintenance Short Hair

BY DEVIN RILEY MULLIGAN

A soft fringe sits just above the brows. One longer piece falls in front of the ear and stops at the cheekbone, and the nape is tapered close to the neck. With most of the hair gone, the eyes, the jaw and a pair of big hoop earrings get the attention. This is the pixie cut we have been shaping on our chair: chic, flattering and very easy to live with.

What is a pixie cut

A pixie is a short cut that follows the shape of the head. The back and sides are kept close. The top is left a little longer so it can move, and it usually ends in a fringe that is soft and wispy rather than blunt. A good pixie isn't simply short. It is cut around one person's head shape, hairline and features, so it looks deliberate from every angle: front, profile and behind.

From the side you can see what makes it work. The fringe sweeps across, the hair around the ear is kept neat and open, and the length tapers down the neck in one smooth line. Face on, the fringe frames the eyes, and the short sides leave the cheekbones clear.

Why now

For anyone tired of long hair that takes forever to dry, a pixie is the most freeing change there is. In Tokyo it makes particular sense. Through the rainy season and the humid summer months, long hair can feel heavy on the neck and lose its shape the moment you step outside. A short, well-cut shape is designed to sit close and look intentional, so the weather has far less hair to work on.

It is also simply cool. Wear it with a slip dress and trainers around Aoyama or with something sharper for the evening, and it suits both. Short hair puts the focus on your face, your earrings and your style.

The process

Before

Where you start shapes how we get there. Before any length comes off, we look at the hair as it is: how long it is, how it falls, where it has weight and where it lies flat. We also look at how it grows at the crown and nape and what its texture is. Then we talk about how much time you want to spend styling each morning, and we decide together where the length should stay. That might mean a longer fringe, more length on top, or softer pieces around the ears and face.

The cutting is precise. We keep the back and sides close and clean, then cut the top and fringe so they fall naturally instead of sitting flat. Texture is cut in so the hair can be pushed around with your fingers. That separated, slightly piecey finish is a big part of why the cut feels easy rather than fussy. Every cut includes a shampoo and blow-dry, and we show you how to recreate the finish at home.

What to book

Behind the scences

For a new pixie, book one of our cuts. Shampoo and blow-dry are included in each. A Stylist Cut is JPY 8,800, a Top Stylist Cut is JPY 10,450 and a Senior Stylist Cut is JPY 12,100. These prices are a guide, and the exact price is confirmed when you book online.

With short hair, a small amount of growth changes the shape, so regular trims are what keep a pixie looking sharp. If you only need the fringe refreshed between full cuts, a Bang / Fringe Cut (about 3cm) is JPY 3,300. A Bang Cut + Face Framing (about 3cm) is JPY 5,500 and also tidies the pieces around the face.

Make it yours

ASSORT comes from the word assortment, and our founding idea is 十人十色, "ten people, ten colours". Ten clients means ten different designs, and the pixie shows this well. On one person it is soft and gamine, with a long, wispy fringe. On another it is sharp and graphic, with a cropped nape and a clean line around the ear. There's no house version we push on everyone.

Styling at home can be as simple as towel-drying, a quick blast with the dryer and a little wax or balm worked through with your fingertips for texture. Brush the fringe across for a polished look, or ruffle the top for something more relaxed. Either way it takes minutes, and that is the point of a pixie.
