Fall Hair Trends in Tokyo: Vivid Color, Bangs & Perms

This fall, most of the color we've mixed in Assort Tokyo has been pink, indigo, orange and red. On the cutting side, bangs haven't gone anywhere. They've just split into more shapes: sleek and straight, soft and shaggy, micro-short, and the curtain bangs that are firmly back. Perms and layers are keeping pace. Some people want layers cut with real precision, and others want a relaxed, shaggy perm that looks lived-in. Here's what we're seeing on the floor and how to book it.

This season's color and cut trends

Color first. Four shades keep coming up. Pink runs from soft rose to deeper raspberry, and the second photo shows a warm, even pink worn straight with full bangs. Orange covers the copper-to-tangerine range you can see in the first, third and fourth photos. Red sits alongside it for anyone who wants a deeper, moodier warmth. Indigo is the cool one of the group, a dark blue-violet that suits people who'd rather go deep than bright. We expect indigo to be the dark horse of this season.

For cuts, bangs are the constant, and there are several versions:

Layers and perms go with all of these. We're seeing two directions. One is precise, deliberate layering, where every length has a job, like the pink cut stepping down around the face. The other is relaxed and shaggy, often with a perm for loose movement, like the wavy copper shag in our third photo. If you've been following wolf cuts, butterfly layers or the hime cut, you're in the same territory.

Straight bangs are clean, blunt or lightly see-through, and they work with sleek hair. Micro bangs are cropped well above the brow, which reads graphic and a little bold. Our fourth photo pairs a short fringe with a layered copper cut. Shaggy bangs are broken up and textured, and they blend into a shag. Curtain bangs part in the middle and sweep outward to frame the face, like the long copper look in our first photo.

Why now

Autumn in Tokyo is when many people change their hair. The heavy summer humidity eases off, so a fringe stays where you put it and texture holds its shape better. The ginkgo trees along the avenues near our salon turn gold, and warm oranges, coppers and reds suit that light. Pink and indigo give you another option if you'd like your hair to stand out against the season rather than match it.

The cuts are here to stay because they're so flexible. A fringe or a set of layers can change the whole feel of your hair without losing length, and it can be adjusted cut by cut. You can go from soft curtain bangs to a sharper straight fringe, or from precise layers to something shaggier, over a few visits.

The process

Every appointment starts with a consultation. We look at your current color and condition, how your hair naturally falls, and how much time you want to spend styling it each morning. For vivid shades like pink, orange or red, where you're starting from matters. Depending on how light or dark your hair is now, a brighter result can need a lightening step before the color goes on, and we'll explain that before we start.

For bangs and layers, we cut around your face shape, your hairline and any cowlicks. Micro bangs and curtain bangs behave very differently on different hairlines, so we'll be honest about what will sit well. For shaggy looks, a perm can add the movement that makes layers fall into place. For precise looks, the cut does most of the work.

What to book

The prices below are from our menu. They're a guide, and the exact price is confirmed when you book online.

Cuts: Stylist Cut from JPY 8,800, Top Stylist Cut from JPY 10,450, Senior Stylist Cut from JPY 12,100. These all include shampoo and blow-dry. If you just want to add or refresh bangs, there's the Bang / Fringe Cut (about 3cm) at JPY 3,300 and Bang Cut + Face Framing (about 3cm) at JPY 5,500, which is a good fit for curtain bangs.

Color: Single Process (Full Head) from JPY 9,900 or Illumina Colour from JPY 11,000 for all-over shades. If your hair needs lightening first to reach a vivid pink, orange or red, look at Double Process (1 bleach + toner) from JPY 26,400 or Double Process Creative from JPY 30,800. For multi-tone creative color, so ask us for a quote. Color menus don't include shampoo and blow-dry.

Perms: Cold Perm from JPY 11,000, Digital Perm from JPY 20,900 and Airwave Perm from JPY 20,900 for relaxed, shaggy movement. The Bang / Fringe Perm from JPY 5,500 gives your fringe a softer curve. Perm menus don't include shampoo and blow-dry.

Longer hair adds a length fee to color, perm and treatment menus: JPY +1,100 for shoulder to armpit, JPY +2,200 for armpit to mid-back, and JPY +3,300 for mid-back and longer. Cuts and bang cuts have no length fee.
